Our History

CHI’s HistoryIn 1986, the California Hospital Association (CHA) Board of Trustees voted to form a captive insurance company for the benefit of the CHA membership.  CHI was formed in 1988 in the state of California by nine hospitals.  Before 1988 and the formation of CHI, the California hospital professional liability marketplace was monopolized by one dominant carrier.  CHI is domiciled in Hawaii and registered to do business in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Idaho.

CHI’s ownership base includes independent hospitals and small hospital systems as well as physician groups, high quality skilled nursing and long term care facilities and other health care entities.  Today, there are 36 policyholder/owners of CHI and it is the longest continually operating hospital professional liability insurance company in California.
