In 1986, the California Hospital Association (CHA) Board of Trustees voted to form a captive insurance company for the benefit of the CHA membership. CHI was formed in 1988 in the state of California by nine hospitals. Before 1988 and the formation of CHI, the California hospital professional liability marketplace was monopolized by one dominant carrier. CHI is domiciled in Hawaii and registered to do business in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Idaho. In states other than California, CHI operates using “doing business as” (DBA) names. For example, in the state of Oregon, CHI operates as Oregon Healthcare Insurance Company, RRG (OHI) and in the state of Washington, CHI operates as Washington Healthcare Insurance Company, RRG (WHI).
CHI’s ownership base includes independent hospitals and small hospital systems as well as physician groups, dentists, high quality skilled nursing and long term care facilities and other health care entities. Today, we are approaching over 100 policyholder/owners of CHI and it is the longest continually operating hospital professional liability insurance company in California. In 2018, The Dentist Program began offering dental professional liability insurance to dentists in the state of Washington. The Dentist Program was expanded to the state of Oregon (OHI) in 2021, offering dental malpractice liability insurance to dentists in Oregon.
